Hometown Heroes of Atlanta: Robert W. Woodruff

Hometown Heroes of Atlanta: Robert W. Woodruff

“There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.” Robert W. Woodruff

In this installment of Hometown Heroes of Atlanta, we honor Robert W. Woodruff, a man whose quiet strength and remarkable generosity helped transform Atlanta into the global city it is today. His name graces parks, hospitals, and universities, but his true legacy lives in the lives touched by his vision and philanthropy.

🔧 Fired. Doubted. Determined.
Woodruff’s story did not begin in boardrooms. He left Emory University without graduating and was dismissed from several jobs. At 19, he earned just 60 cents a day as a machinist’s apprentice. Those humble beginnings instilled discipline, humility, and a relentless work ethic that would carry him to greatness.

🥤 Coca Cola and the Rise of Atlanta
In 1923, at the age of 33, Woodruff became president of The Coca Cola Company. Under his leadership, Coca Cola expanded into more than 120 countries, created thousands of jobs, and became one of the most recognized brands in the world. As Coca Cola grew, so did Atlanta, establishing itself as the corporate capital of the South and a hub of global business.

💸 Anonymous Giving. Enduring Impact.
What truly set Woodruff apart was his philanthropy. Most of his gifts were made quietly through the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, and his generosity continues to shape Atlanta. His contributions included:
  • $105 million to Emory University, transforming medical research and facilities
  • Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta
  • Support in bringing the CDC to Atlanta
  • Lifelong gifts to the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Morehouse College, and Grady Hospital

During his lifetime, Woodruff gave more than $350 million, much of it anonymously. His giving was never about recognition, it was about responsibility.

Atlanta’s Foundation Builder
Robert W. Woodruff reminds us that true legacy is not measured in applause or credit but in contribution. His story is a call to all of us — to give, to serve, and to build a stronger city together.

Atlanta is better because of him. And when we carry forward his spirit of generosity, we make it better still.
