Dunwoody

Dunwoody, Georgia, located in DeKalb County just north of Atlanta, boasts a rich history and dynamic growth. Established in the early 1830s, the area was named after Major Charles Dunwody (1828–1905), with an extra “o” added due to a misspelling on a banking note. The community developed around the Roswell Railroad, which opened in 1881 and operated until 1921, fostering Dunwoody’s growth as a crossroads community. Despite the railroad’s closure, Dunwoody continued to thrive, transitioning from a rural area to a suburban residential community in the 1960s. The city was officially incorporated on December 1, 2008, following a community-led movement.    As of the 2020 U.S. Census, Dunwoody had a population of 51,683, with a population density of approximately 3,967.7 people per square mile over 13.03 square miles of land. The city’s demographic composition includes 53.84% White (non-Hispanic), 17.1% Asian, 11.68% Black or African American (non-Hispanic), and 12.79% Hispanic or Latino residents. The median age is 36.5 years, and the median household income is $109,116.   Dunwoody is home to several historic sites, including the Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, built in 1829, and the Cheek-Spruill Farmhouse, constructed in 1906. The city offers a blend of historical charm and modern amenities, making it a unique and vibrant community within the Atlanta metropolitan area.
