“You don’t have to choose between doing well and doing good.” – Arthur Blank
Arthur Blank’s journey is proof that success is not only about what you achieve for yourself, but also about the impact you create for others.
Born in Queens, New York, his life changed dramatically at age 15 when he lost his father. That kind of loss could have ended dreams before they began, but for Arthur, it became the spark that ignited a lifetime of determination, empathy, and purpose. Rather than allowing grief to close doors, he used it as the drive to open new ones for himself and for others.
In 1978, alongside Bernie Marcus, he co-founded The Home Depot. The first two stores opened in Atlanta, planting roots that would help transform the city’s economic landscape. What began as an innovative idea for home improvement retail grew into a national leader, creating jobs and empowering homeowners across the country. Arthur’s vision expanded beyond business into sports and community pride. Through AMB Sports and Entertainment, he brought Atlanta the Falcons, Atlanta United, and Mercedes Benz Stadium, a world class venue that has become a gathering place for the city.
Arthur’s true legacy, however, is not measured only in business milestones but in his unwavering commitment to philanthropy. In 1995, he established The Arthur M Blank Family Foundation with the mission of making lasting, positive change. Since then, the foundation has invested over one billion dollars into initiatives that strengthen communities.
His impact includes revitalizing Atlanta’s Westside with affordable housing and educational programs, supporting mental health and environmental conservation, fostering youth leadership, and making a historic two hundred million dollar gift to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for the new Arthur M Blank Hospital.
Arthur Blank embodies the belief that doing well and doing good are not separate paths, they are one and the same. His life is a reminder that true success is defined by how many lives you lift, how much hope you inspire, and how deeply you serve the community around you.
Atlanta is better, stronger, and more united because of Arthur Blank’s vision and heart. From humble beginnings to an enduring legacy, he shows us that when you lead with both purpose and passion, you do more than leave a mark, you change lives. Thank you for all you have done for our fair city. As a lifelong Home Depot Raving fan, your company rises above the rest.
