At Disney there is an unspoken rule. The child decides when the hug ends.
Walt Disney once said, “You never know how much that child may need that hug.”
Science proves he was right. When we hold someone longer, our bodies release oxytocin, the bonding hormone that lowers stress and brings calm.
A quick squeeze barely registers. But when you hold a hug for 8 to 20 seconds, it slows the heartbeat, relaxes the body, and builds trust.
For children this is not neediness. It is calibration. Their nervous systems are downloading safety signals second by second until they reset.
The lesson is simple. Hug your child. Hug your dog. Hug someone you love. Hug someone who needs a hug.❤️🩹Don’t rush it. Let them decide when to let go.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is presence.
