The Mayor Who Reshaped Atlanta and Opened the Door to the World
In Atlanta, we owe much of our modern identity to one man: Maynard Jackson.
When he became the first Black mayor of Atlanta in 1974, he didn’t just break barriers, he built bridges. Between communities. Between industries. And between Atlanta and the world.

Maynard Jackson’s leadership redefined what was possible for a Southern city. He made it his mission to ensure minority-owned businesses had access to major city contracts, particularly during the expansion of Hartsfield Airport (now Hartsfield-Jackson in his honor).
He transformed procurement policies to open opportunities for Black entrepreneurs and professionals who had been historically excluded. His influence extended well beyond infrastructure, it sparked a new model for economic empowerment in city governance.

The expansion of Atlanta’s airport under Jackson wasn’t just a construction project. It was a strategic vision, one that would anchor Atlanta as a global business hub.
He knew that world-class connectivity could drive growth, equity, and jobs. Today, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the world’s busiest, and much of that success began with his leadership.
🔥 The Olympic Connection: Opening Atlanta to the World
Although he wasn’t in office when Atlanta was officially awarded the 1996 Summer Olympics, Maynard Jackson was instrumental behind the scenes.
During his third term as mayor in the early 1990s, Jackson worked closely with the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG) to secure international support, improve city infrastructure, and ensure the Games would benefit all Atlantans, not just the elite.
He advocated for community investment, transportation improvements, and minority contractor participation in Olympic-related development. His influence helped the Games become a transformational moment for Atlanta’s global identity.
The Olympics weren’t just about sports. For Maynard Jackson, they were about legacy, and lifting up the entire city.
